In a world struggling to survive the poisonous Spore-laden Pall, deputy courier Elen carries in her body a viper she can release to destroy Spore. Elen and her beloved Aoving were atoners, child slaves forced to walk ahead of noble parties to shield them from the Pall. They escaped together and Elen raised Ao's son Kem after her death. When arrogant prince-warden Gevulin and his entourage showed up in Orledder Halt, Elen was forced to guide him through a series of dangers. After Gevulin was taken over by an ancient spirit, seeking to protect the world from the re-emergence of sorcerer kings, Elen helped Sara'ala keep up the pretense and love grew between them. As the first episode ended, the real Gevulin was returned to his body - and decided to use Elen as a weapon to take the throne! His quest takes them to Elen and Ao's childhood realm of Farlandia, where the prince seeks allies. The Lady Eleawona will give him troops after he puts her on Farlandia's throne. Captures and escapes, and betrayals follow. Gevulin's gamble fails but he makes one last request of Elen at the end. She makes a promise but gains what she wants most in return. I'll read anything by Elliott and am anxious for more of this latest most unusual saga!
