K
ell Woods' historical fantasy,
Upon a Starlit Tide
, is set in 1758 Saint-Malo, Brittany, and features Lucinde Léon, youngest (and adopted) daughter of a wealthy shipowner,
the Lion
.
L
uce has no interest in her sisters' occupations, as they seek high society marriages. She's very different from them in every way, including her affliction - feet '
as gnarled and brittle as driftwood.
' She also can communicate with the Fae. Despite France being at war with England, Luce has befriended young English smuggler, Samuel, who's teaching her to sail.
H
er life changes dramatically the day she rescues Morgan de Chatelaine (son of a very influential family) from drowning. The Lion also gives her a ship, to do with as she will (but not to sail on it). Though Morgan woos her, Luce gradually realizes that she loves Samuel. They're together when she discovers her own heritage from birth.
L
uce and Samuel share great danger at sea and on shore, while an English army gathers to take Saint-Malo. Fortunately an old fae tide-woman teaches Luce the sea-magic she will need to save those she loves, after she learns the truth of her adoption. As
Upon a Starlit Tide
ends, sorrow and sea finally unite.
