Flora Delargy's Gold Rush, aimed at ages 7-11, tells 'The untold story of the First Nations woman who started the Klondike Gold Rush' in the Yukon valley. Its spectacular illustrations do full justice to the wild beauty of this part of the world.

The First Nations woman who did this is Shaaw Tláa (Kate Cormack), who married a white American prospector. The author starts by introducing the remote Yukon Territory; the 14 First Nations who called it home; and the devastating impact of newcomers bringing diseases that decimated them. Young readers learn of the Cormacks' discovery of gold, and how news spread to Seattle. Gold fever erupted and 100,000 gold diggers traveled to the region.

But this is not just the story of Shaaw Tláa. Delargy fills out this account with tales of other key figures (mainly fearless women). We learn about Stateswoman Martha Black; Boomtown Entrepeneur Belinda Mulrooney; and Prospector Nellie Cashman - all of whom made their own impact on history. The author also explains the suffering of First Nations people caused by the rapid influx of miners.

Sadly, Kate Cormack was ultimately treated badly, but she has now been inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame. I really enjoyed this picture book, not just for its window into the history of the Gold Rush and Canadian Yukon, but also for its featuring of trailblazing women, who rarely get recognition by historians.
