T. Kingfisher's Thornhedge brought a new perspective to Sleeping Beauty, so that readers saw both princess and fairy godmother in new ways. Now she does the same thing with The Goose Girl and it's just as rewarding.

Cordelia's mother Evangeline is a powerful, controlling, evil sorcerer. She often punishes her daughter by forcing her to remain silent and motionless for hours at a time. For Cordelia, 'Being made obedient felt like being a corpse.' Evangeline's familiar is Falada, a beautiful white horse. Cordelia loves him and her daily rides with him make her feel safe and keep her sane.

Next readers meet middle aged Hester who has premonitions. She knows something dark is coming to the manor home where she lives with her brother Samuel. Soon Evangeline tells Cordelia that she'll be marrying a rich man soon and they move in to the manor house, where Samuel is smitten. Hester is horrified but quickly realizes that Cordelia needs saving as much as her brother does.

After Evangeline kills a rival, she manipulates her daughter's engagement to Lord Evermore, loved by Hester. Then Cordelia is contacted from beyond the grave by someone who can help. That, intense research in Evermore's library - and an irate gander - finally save the day. Don't miss this one!
