Its lead, Cassie Andrews, appears to be a very ordinary young woman. She works at Kellner Books in NYC, and it's there that her life is turned upside down after her favorite customer, elderly John Webber, dies in the bookstore. He leaves a very special book, a note for Cassie inside: 'May you enjoy the places it takes you to and the friends you find there.' She shares what happened with her best friend and roommate Izzy. Holding the book and talking about time she spent in Venice, she suddenly finds she has opened a doorway to that city. They start experimenting with the magic book and Cassie discovers that she 'could return to any door she had ever been through, anywhere on the planet.' Soon they encounter Drummond Fox, a librarian who has tried to keep books of power (The Book of Doors the most sought) out of the wrong hands. The story accelerates into a maelstrom of action and violence (both magical and physical) as Cassie and her book are hunted by others with their own magical books and dangerous powers. Readers finally learn the origin of all the books as the story comes full circle to an ending - and a beginning. Don't miss this one, my best read of the year so far!
