Here's a thoughtful and lyrical picture book that a range of ages can appreciate - Susan Hood's We Are One, beautifully illustrated by Linda Yan. It looks at all kinds of collections, of which one is part.

It opens, 'One can be one thing all on its own - one star, one stream, one stick, one stone.' Text on the bottom fills in with details that someone reading with the child might explain as well, e.g. that the idea that the whole is greater than the some of its parts is credited to Aristotle.

The young reader is then introduced to twosomes (sandwich, marriage), triples (haiku, 3-letter word), quadruples (compass points, seasons) and so on, all the way to tens (decade, century).

The picture book has a delightful, comforting, conclusion that we're all part of a family, but also 'We're moondust and star shine / all circling the sun. / We're a vast constellation, / and yes ... / we are one!' Highly recommended!
