A
n old man lives alone but enjoys watching the squirrels outdoors. He puts peanuts on his hat for them. Then one day, sitting on the bench outside, he finds a kitten under his headgear. He calls the kitten Hat and spoils him, but fears to let him go outside.
T
hen one day the old man is gone. Other people show up and look after Hat. They also shut the door, but one day Hat sees his chance. He sneaks out, but stays close and doesn't chase the squirrels. When the old man finally returns, he trusts Hat and lets him go outside.

is a sweet story portraying the pleasure of feline companionship for all ages, and with a lesson that trust can be earned.
