H
ere's a picture book inspired by a young girl's experience at the 2017 Women's March. Heather Dean Brewer's
Love is Powerful
is aimed at ages five to eight and engagingly illustrated by LeUyen Pham. The format switches between typical picture book pages and cartoon double pages, a technique I find effective.
I
t opens on a rainbow of crayons as Mari helps her mother color '
A message for the world.
' She repeatedly wonders how the whole world will hear, and Mama keeps reminding her that '
love is powerful.
' When they join the large, loud crowd of marchers, Mari again wonders how people will hear their message.
M
ari sits on Mama's shoulders and calls out her message. Soon more and more folk join in till Mari's message is '
as loud as breaking waves.
' Love is indeed powerful and young people
can
make a difference!
