H
ere's a great read for young environmental activists,
Dana Digs In
by Laura Pedersen, brightly illustrated by Daniela Frongia. This girl digs, literally, in the ground, but also
digs in
with her persistence and determination to make a change.
I
t all starts with a salad at home, with store bought tomatoes (usually picked green) that taste like Dana's brother Ryan's socks! Dana decides to plant a garden - but where? By their house is too shady, and she can't use the baseball diamond. She does get permission to use a lot just sold until the Fall.
D
ana learns about planting from seeds, using compost to make fertilizer, irrigation, weeding and supports for tall plants. She enlists volunteers, and makes jams and preserves. Success leads to offers of new locations and new opportunities - and her family starts to really enjoy their salads at dinner time!
