Though generally 'furry-spider-in-the-basement' brave, young Kaia is SUPER scared of bees - she stepped on one barefoot once. Adding to her fear, there are thousands of bees (and their hives) on their building's flat roof. Kaia's dad is concerned about honeybees dying and 'reads bee books and talks about bees nonstop.' He takes care of the beehives on the roof. Kaia boasts about her family's beekeeping to her friends, but she's still scared - until events force her to face her fear. Gradually, Kaia starts working with her father and, when it's time, helps harvest the honey. She learns that 'bees are amazing and scary and mysterious.
