B
ear explains how to make maple syrup from sap in this charmingly informative woodland picture book, starring Bear, hindered in her efforts by Dog and Squirrel (who try to help but are mainly anxious to sample the end product!)
T
he story opens with the weather warming, spring on the way, and Bear getting ready to make maple syrup (Dog's ears perk up at the thought of pancakes!) She gets her tapping tools together and seeks out the sugar maples she marked in the Fall (when she could see the color of their leaves).
A
t every step, young readers learn exactly how to tap maple sap, and to hang covered buckets to collect it. Next comes slow evaporation, that turns forty gallons of sap into one gallon of maple syrup! Of course, once Bear is done, Dog and Squirrel demand pancakes!!
