Just Because    by Mac Barnett & Isabelle Arsenault Order:  USA  Can Candlewick, 2019 (2019) Hardcover, e-Book      Reviewed by Hilary Williamson Rather than saying 'Just Because', Mac Barnett gives imaginative answers to a child's night-time questions in this unusual picture book, illustrated by Isabelle Arsenault. It begins, 'Why is the ocean blue?' The fish play the blues of course and 'cry blue tears'. The book continues with 'What is the rain?'; 'Why do the leaves change color?'; 'Why do birds fly south for the winter?'; 'What happened to the dinosaurs?'; and 'What are black holes?' Though the answer to the last question, 'Why do we have to sleep?' makes the perfect ending, my favorite addresses why the leaves change color - they 'keep warm by setting quiet little fires in their leaves.' Just Because will make a delightful, imagination provoking addition to your bedtime reading with a little one.
