Silver in the Wood
is classic fantasy. The wood is Greenhollow, where a Wild Man lives. Tobias Finch is a friend of dryads and especially of Bramble. He listens to the wood and enjoys a quiet life with his cat Pearl, in his cottage.
T
hat life is disrupted when Henry Silver, lord of Greenhollow Hall, shows up, curious about everything and a collector of folklore. Silver also wants Tobias to share his bed. When Tobias is injured by locals, Silver helps him heal, telling others he's his
gamekeeper
.
G
radually we learn of Tobias's human past and what changed him and gave him immortality. He warns Silver to stay away from the wood at the time of the Spring Fair, when the Lord of Summer takes handsome youths who are never heard of again.
O
f course, you can see where this is going. Silver is taken on the day of the equinox and his determined mother shows up to demand Tobias's assistance in getting him back. They cut down the ancient oak at the heart of Greenhollow and confront old evil, with an intriguing conclusion.
