Mac Barnett's Circle, illustrated by Jon Klassen is the third, following Triangle and Square, in their Shapes trilogy.

In it, we meet Circle and Circle's friends, Triangle and Square, by Circle's waterfall. They play a game, hide and seek, with one rule - 'No hiding behind the waterfall' because 'It is dark back there.'

Unafraid of the dark, guess where Triangle goes? Brave Circle follows, going farther and farther as it gets darker and darker. She sees eyes and starts admonishing Triangle. Then another set of eyes appears, and it's not Square!

Triangle and Circle flee. Outside the cave, they wonder what kind of a shape it was, there in the dark. Young readers are encouraged to guess too.

As well, as reinforcing the notion of shapes to young readers (aged 5-9), this quirky, nicely illustrated picture book explores fear of the unknown and facing that fear.
