She likes pretending to be one, pretending her brother Charlies is one, or pretending they have a dog of their own. They even talk about what kind they'd like if Mom and Dad were not absolutely against having one. Mom and Dad offer a rabbit instead, and Lola agrees to go with Dad to the pet shop, even though she has no interest in a rabbit. She and Charlie continue to discuss ideal doggy attributes, like 'nice ears'. (Their sibling dialogue is what makes this picture book so appealing.) So, will Lola end up with the dog she wants, you wonder? Well, she does have a pet by the end of this endearing picture book, and it does have very nice ears.
