he Selkie's Mate
is among the most enjoyable books for nine to twelve year old readers that I have read recently. I love everything about this story, from its enchanting tale and rugged seaside setting reminding me of my hometown, to the mesmerizing watercolor illustrations scattered throughout the story.

he space between the ocean and land is a magical one, as ocean dwellers well know. In this wondrous place seals and men can fall in love. What?! A seal and a man?! Yes, if that seal just happens to be a selkie.

he fisherman in this lovely folktale falls in love with a selkie, a seal who can transform herself into the form of a human. The seal woman trusts her fisherman to keep her selkie skin safe and return it to her upon her request. Together they spend many happy years together, raising a family.
O
f course, one day the selkie misses her seal life and wants her skin back. The fisherman must let her go, but he cannot bring himself to do so. All he can tell his beloved selkie is '
tomorrow.
' This lovely tale teaches important life lessons about love and letting go.
