Yak and Dove
Kyo Maclear & Esme Shapiro
Tundra, 2017 (2017)
Reviewed by Hilary Williamson
ak and Dove, in this picture book written by Kyo Maclear and beautifully illustrated by Esme Shapiro, are two friends, who have their differences. The volume includes three stories about them.
If We Were Twins
, Dove poses the question to Yak, '
Do you ever wish we were twins?
' The subsequent discussion soon devolves into disagreement and name calling.
, that begins with Yak lamenting having lost his best friend. Marmot sets up a talent contest to find him a new one. Guess who wins?
Yak and Quiet
, Yak tries to plant some silence, not easy with flighty Dove around. But, together, they do manage to grow a Very Noisy Quiet Garden.
t's all rather silly, but makes clear that we don't have to be alike or to agree on everything, to be good friends, just like Yak and Dove.
