H
ere's a modern feminist take on the
Cinderella
story, Davide Cali's
Cinderella and the Furry Slippers
, edgily illustrated by Raphaelle Barbanegre.
I
t starts out like the original - the poor little girl with the nasty stepmother and stepsisters; dreams of a '
prince on a white horse
' saving her; wanting to go to the ball; and the call on a fairy godmother.
T
hough nothing the fairy godmother conjures up is quite as expected, Cinderella does get to the ball - where she catches the prince's eye for all the wrong reasons.
B
ut it's all good, as Cinderella figures out what she really wants from life - it's not a '
lame prince
' or '
fancy pink dresses
' - and lives happily ever after, on her own terms.
