Honey Girl is different. She is often seen around the North Shore of Oahu Island. She's a favorite of the islanders who call her Super Mom because by the age of fifteen she'd raised seven pups. On a warm November day kite surfers reported seeing a monk seal in distress, covered in green algae and floating in the ocean. Marine experts arrived and a search began. When the seal was found, a marked tag identified her as Honey Girl. A fishhook was caught in her cheek and her tongue was cut by fishing line. The tongue was infected and she hadn't been able to eat for several weeks. Without help, she would soon starve. The scientists took her back to the Waikiki Aquarium to remove the hook. She'd need round the clock care because with her infected tongue she couldn't eat. This is the true story of Honey Girl and her fight for life. One great thing about this book is that as I was reading, I wanted a map to see where Honey girl was found, where she was taken for rehabilitation and later released. I turned a page and found just what I needed. Arbordale Press had it covered. The story is beautifully illustrated and the last pages include additional subject information under Creative Minds and Fun Facts.
