As the rail system in Australia in the nineteenth century expanded, Bob made a name for himself riding trains from one end of the vast land to the other. It all began in South Australia when a homeless pooch (eventually named Bob) was adopted by a railway employee. For a while Bob just stayed close to his new home and the railway yard but then one day he was invited by his new master to join him riding a train he was assigned to work on. From that point on, Bob became very comfortable riding the rails and as he acquired a reputation, the dog began switching trains and visited other parts of the country. He most enjoyed riding on the engine or tender where the train's engineer could watch out for him. When not on a train Bob was welcomed at most stations where he would find a bed for the night and food. Bob's memory is still honored today - his picture can be found in the Adeline Station and the National Railway Museum in Port Adelaide displays his collar. It's a touching story, with excellent illustrations by Andrew McLean, and your youngster will find this tale of an adventurous dog one he or she will enjoy reading again and again.
