The reader is invited to follow the Peters family when they decide in the 1860s to leave their native Germany and seek a new life in America. Robert, Margarete and their children travel from their small village in Europe by a number of conveyances (carriages, ships, trains, etc.) as they make their way to Omaha, Nebraska, where they begin life anew as farmers.

The family thrives and now nearly 150 years later Olivia Peters and her family are about to return to their German roots and visit the German village that their ancestors came from. They hope to not only discover the Peters' old home in the village but also to reconnect with any family who still reside there.

This special picture book not only reminds us of the immigrant experience that so many of our ancestors underwent when they decided to relocate to America from other lands but it also suggests that a few generations later families have made an attempt to reconnect with their far-flung relatives.

Now, perhaps it might be well for Americans to remember that score upon score of their ancestors sought refuge and a new beginning in the country. The United States has always extended a welcoming hand to those from other lands and it is time to underscore that centuries old tradition!
