I've always liked graphic novels for younger readers, especially the more reluctant ones. Here's an engaging new series for middle grade readers, by Judd Winick, opening with Hilo: The Boy Who Crashed to Earth.

Young narrator D.J. admits to not being 'good at anything' though his older brothers and younger sisters 'are all AWESOME at something.' Then, at age ten, an amnesiac falls from outer space and names himself Hilo. He has a lot to learn about Earth! But he starts to regain some memories ...

Hilo attends school with D.J. and his friend Gina, leading to some funny incidents. When a monster robot ant shows up and attacks them, Hilo is broken, but manages to fix himself. Which is a good thing as more robotic attacks follow. As does an obliteratron! Can they stop it before it destroys Earth? And will D.J. find something he's good at?

You'll just have to read The Boy Who Crashed to Earth to find out.
