I
've always liked graphic novels for younger readers, especially the more reluctant ones. Here's an engaging new series for middle grade readers, by Judd Winick, opening with
Hilo: The Boy Who Crashed to Earth
.
Y
oung narrator D.J. admits to not being '
good at anything
' though his older brothers and younger sisters '
are all AWESOME at something.
' Then, at age ten, an amnesiac falls from outer space and names himself Hilo. He has a lot to learn about Earth! But he starts to regain some memories ...
H
ilo attends school with D.J. and his friend Gina, leading to some funny incidents. When a monster robot ant shows up and attacks them, Hilo is broken, but manages to fix himself. Which is a good thing as more robotic attacks follow. As does an
obliteratron
! Can they stop it before it destroys Earth? And will D.J. find something he's good at?
Y
ou'll just have to read
The Boy Who Crashed to Earth
to find out.
