After Sonya's papa comes home with three fluffy chicks, it's her job to care for them, and she takes it very seriously. They grow up and lay eggs. Then, one night, there are squawking noises in the chicken coop. Its floor is 'frosted with feathers' and one of Sony's beloved hens is missing. She cries, but then her father tells her a story about the fox who took her chicken to feed his own kit and keep it from hunger. Choose Sonya's Chickens to explain the circle of life to a child.
