Before becoming a writer while living in Manhattan, Matthew Quinn Martin was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and raised in New Haven, Connecticut. Now he lives a quieter life, still in the United States, on a little island off the coast in the North Atlantic where the winters are especially quiet, too quiet even. And it is this solitude and quietness that allows one's imagination to take hold and produce horror novels such as Nightlife.

Enter Beth Becker. She's a bartender at a New Harbor nightclub by night and a monster hunter even later at night. Jack Jackson (oh, how original!) is also a monster hunter, working out of his APEX Security (keeping apex predators safe, perhaps?) van. The two pair up, along with a canine companion, Blood, in this dark and sinister novel.

What is this dynamic duo hunting? Well, it seems that New Harbor is afflicted by the bloodthirsty Night Angels who prey on forgotten, seemingly unimportant souls. The tension of this very bloody read is heightened when the hunters become the hunted.

I hesitate to call this a summer thrill. The biggest thrill I got was setting the book down and not picking it up again. The vampire/monster killer thing has been done to death and I got more than my fill of blood, at least for my taste (yes, puns intended).
