I rather enjoyed this installment of the All-Stars series, particularly because the time period (the eighteenth century) fascinates me. Young George had a rather decent upbringing, growing up on a tobacco plantation. From farm work to carpentry, to blacksmiths and coopers, the boy had his nose in everything, always eager to learn. And George's incessant desire to learn would pay off. As a young adult, the future President became very skilled at surveying. His older brother even hired him to survey his newly purchased land and home, the famous Mount Vernon. The ever astute George even cleverly distracted Indians with a dance so he and his companions could sneak away, unscathed! Yes, the reader will find plenty of action and adventure to hold his attention. Just as in the other stories of this series, interesting facts are given. Most of us know that Washington had dentures, but never wooden! Are you curious as to what those dentures were really made of? Well, you'll just have to read the book to find out. Of all the History All-Stars books I've read thus far, this one is my favorite. Why, you may wonder? While reading about George's life I also got a picture of what living in the eighteenth century in what is now the United States was like and how different it is from our lives today. I got to use my always running wild imagination and pretend in the back of my mind that I was in the story too. And that, my friends, is part of the joy of reading.
