azul is a little boy who lives in a fortified

along the Silk Road. His father is the lord of the settlement and his grandfather is a kite-maker. When a large group of bandits attack and lay siege to the han, it appears Yazul, his family and everyone else is in grave danger.

s food and water are about to run out, the little boy and his grandfather come up with a clever plan for scaring away the bandits who are camped outside the settlement's walls.

ombining kites and firecrackers, the plan works beautifully and the little boy makes his father proud.
T
his story and accompanying art will work well with a child ready for longer picture books that do more to develop characters and a storyline. It would make an ideal transition work into lengthier chapter books. It also introduces an exotic setting and different culture. If the child is interested, you can check online for more information about the Silk Road and its role in history.
