A client dropped dead during one of his private readings at a fancy Dallas hotel. Now the client's crazy son is accusing Manfred of her murder and the theft of her jewelry. The police are still investigating, but in the meantime, Midnight, Texas, is receiving lots of outside attention, with the sheriff stopping by to question Manfred and reporters hounding him for a statement. Manfred recently moved to Midnight where he runs the telephone psychic portion of his business. Midnight is a small town of about a dozen citizens and each citizen has a secret. Good neighbors don't ask or tell. The physic Manfred and Fiji the witch, who lives across the street, are about as normal as it gets in Midnight. Having reporters around is a problem for everyone. Manfred turns to tall, beautiful Olivia Charity for advice. Olivia was in the hotel the same night Manfred was there, doing whatever she does when she leaves Midnight on business. That night, Olivia dined with a couple who were found dead in their room the next morning. When things go from bad to worse, the entire town steps up to help Manfred straighten things out. They might all have secrets, but they're still good neighbors. A rich corporation has bought the defunct Roco Fria Hotel in Midnight. This means new people stopping in, not to mention manpower for the jobs that'll be created when the hotel opens. They're moving at an unheard of pace to complete the restoration. The town keeps a close eye on their progress. Harris has created a southwestern town with a personality all its own. I'm looking forward to getting to know the citizens who live there. Look for characters you're sure to remember from the Sookie Stackhouse series in Harris' ever growing fictional world.
