T
his attractive board book for children two years of age and older features text in both Mandarin Chinese and English. There is a storm on the way and the little hedgehog who is out looking for food has to scramble for home. As the dark clouds gather and the increasing wind blows pine cones off the trees, other animals also seek shelter.
T
he author adds sound effects to the narrative: '
drippity-drip
' the big drops of rain begin to fall and '
Crack! Boom!
' thunder shakes the forest. The little hedgehog scampers faster, and barely gets back to his cave before the heavens open up and it pours.
C
alifornia artist/author Belle Yang uses an interesting palette of just a few colors (brown, green, yellow) to illustrate the hedgehog's run for cover and it makes her illustrations really pop.
M
andarin Chinese has four pitched tones and at the back of the book you'll find a pinyin pronunciation guide. No matter if your family speaks Chinese or not, this is a picture book any child will enjoy looking at.
