As her birthday approaches she requests ... no, make that demands ... a list of gifts as long as your arm. 'I want a giant tree house and a parrot that can talk. I want a pair of fancy shoes that light up when I walk. I need a new tiara to wear each day at school. And a pony and some roller skates and lots and lots of jewels.' The nasty little girl drones on and on as the list gets longer and longer and longer. Then her dad takes a suitcase full of royal money and out he goes to buy his little girl all her heart desires. On the big day there are gifts piled everywhere and the nasty child sees the rooms filled with wrapped presents. She says, 'It's just what I deserve. I'll open all my presents, then my banquet can be served.' At this point something quite unexpected occurs (I'll not tell you what happens) and suddenly the greedy little wretch realizes she might lose something she really loves very much. Although there is a total reversal and the princess is not as bad now as she was at the story's outset, it is still difficult to accept her sudden reformation. Ruby might live happily ever after but I, for one, still don't like the tiny tyrant! Would a child like this book? I'm sure Ruby's actions would probably be found amusing so it would get a few laughs.
