If you have followed the delightful adventures of the Button family, you'll want to read this latest installment that focuses on Granddaddy Ike's boyhood as he grows up during the Civil War.

The older members of the family are off to fight in the war, leaving Ike home with the women. The eleven year old isn't thrilled with the situation but he soon discovers there will be plenty of action in the little river town of Keokuk, Iowa.

Ike and his best friend, the daughter of the local preacher, become involved in assisting a Black woman and her two sons fleeing from two bounty hunters who are hot on their trail. Potentially a very dangerous situation for everyone concerned, but the two youngsters rise to the challenge and bravely assist in the woman's flight north.

This could be the end of this series but one hopes that won't be the case. Ike and the minister's daughter are far too interesting to showcase in only one novel. These two engaging characters should be the featured again since they make a delightful duo.
