Animal Camouflage: My First Discoveries    by Rene Mettler Order:  USA  Can Moonlight, 2014 (2014) Hardcover     Reviewed by Bob Walch Utilizing transparent pages that underscore the way animals, insects and plants use camouflage, this natural science book shows young readers how there are all sorts of clever ways to protect oneself from danger. The desert fox and young seal pups can blend into their surroundings, as do grasshoppers, because they are the same color or their coats/skins match up well. Other creatures' coats change as the seasons change, or they can turn any shade of color to match their surroundings like the chameleon. While some creatures, like moths and caterpillars, can nearly make themselves invisible by blending in with their surroundings others imitate other creatures (some orchids imitate female insects) to make sure the species survive. This clever book will help parents and teachers show children how camouflage is an important survival mechanism in the plant and animal worlds. This would be an excellent way to introduce a unit on how animals/plant/insects protect themselves.
