A
city is a fascinating place and the way it functions is the subject of this book that investigates how power and water are made available to a city's denizens and how people get around above and below ground. Other chapters look at how cities are governed, what urbanization is and the ways planning departments foster city development.
T
wenty-five hands on projects are included by the author and will actively engage the young reader in understanding what the challenges are in constructing, planning and managing a city. Also look for the fascinating sidebars randomly placed throughout the book that contain such bits of information as how old New York City subways cars end up in the Atlantic as reefs for fish, and manhole covers are round so that they don't accidentally fall into the hole.
B
oth teachers and home schooling parents will find this a very useful book which integrates science, technology, engineering, art, and math in a very practical and interesting manner in the study of cities.
