Big Bug    by Henry Cole Order:  USA  Can Simon & Schuster, 2014 (2014) Hardcover, e-Book      Reviewed by Bob Walch Henry Cole uses a minimalist approach when it comes to text here. Since this is a picture book about the nature of scale and size comparisons, he decided to let his illustrations do the talking. The book begins with a huge, two-page spread of a ladybug. The following spread shows the lady bug on a big leaf. The insect appears rather small in comparison to the leaf. Next we see the very small bug and little leaf as part of a big yellow flower plant. Of course, when a dog sniffs the yellow flower it looks rather small and the ladybug is now downright puny, and you can barely see it. As you work farther into the book the illustrations show how perspective changes, and size comparisons become even more pronounced. This book offers a unique way to discuss size and perspective with a youngster. Henry Cole provides the pictures and a few words but you'll have to do the rest. If nothing else, your child will have a pretty good idea of the meaning of big and small by the time you are finished!
