The Raven and the Loon    by Rachel Qitsualik-Tinsley, Sean Qitsualik-Tinsley & Kim Smith Order:  USA  Can Inhabit Media, 2014 (2014) Hardcover     Reviewed by Bob Walch This nicely illustrated picture book tells the folk tale of how the raven and loon came by their now very familiar feathers. Originally both were white but that all changed one day when the two birds engaged in what started out to be a sewing challenge. Raven was a very talkative, some might say very pushy, and almost bullying individual. He engaged Loon in a conversation (well, it was actually more of a monologue) one day while Loon was sewing. 'I could do better than that!' Raven said. Before Loon could reply, Raven continued, 'Wait! I'm brilliant! I know what we can do for each other. I'll make a pretty coat for you, and you make one for me. Yes?' Loon agreed and the two birds got to work. Using a little magic, Raven finished the task first and Loon had a very distinctive feather covering. Then it was Loon's turn but, as you'll see, Raven complicated the task. I'll let you find out what the final outcome was. There are other books that re-tell this folk tale; this rendering is not only easy to follow but the art also really enhances the narrative. If you don't already have a good copy of this Inuit story, this book would be an excellent addition to your child's library.
