As Susan Hill proves in The Mist in the Mirror, it can be atmospheric and psychological. Sir James Monmouth has been living abroad since he was five. After years of adventuring, he has returned to the land of his birth. In England, he hopes to learn more about his hero, Conrad Vane, a renowned world traveler. Everyone tries to warn him away from Vane, but Monmouth is determined to find out more about his early life. Aside from the odd warnings, there is also the strange boy who disappears every time Monmouth tries to approach him. And no matter where he is, Monmouth hears noises and sees things that are not there. It all comes to a head when he travels to Vane's school and learns that he had an ancestor attend during the same time - an ancestor who also died there. More than ever, Monmouth is determined to find out the truth about now not only Vane but also his dead ancestor, and the truth is nothing he could ever imagine. While The Mist in the Mirror is a ghost story, it is also a wonderfully atmospheric mystery filled with psychological terror. Hill knows how to set a mood and keep it throughout the entire narrative, drawing the reader in so that they are as terrified as the protagonist. The ending is intense, but does leave the reader wanting more. Fans of good old-fashioned ghost stories must check out The Mist in the Mirror. Susan Hill is definitely a master of this genre.
