The Foolish Tortoise    by Richard Buckley & Eric Carle Order:  USA  Can Simon & Schuster, 2013 (2013) Hardcover, Softcover     Reviewed by Bob Walch This board book tells the story of a disgruntled tortoise who was tired of being slow and quite determined to improve his situation in some manner. What did he do? The tortoise 'took off his large and heavy shell and left it lying where it fell'. Free of the encumbrance, the silly tortoise was convinced that he could see the world at double speed, but, as you'll observe as you read this book, that's not exactly what happened. With his protective shell gone, the tortoise felt quite vulnerable and he really wasn't that much faster either. You'll see what encounters make this foolish fellow finally realize that it is time to reclaim his shell and accept his life as it is. I guess the message here is, 'There's no place like home!', but perhaps a better lesson this story teaches is that one should be accepting of his or her abilities, capabilities or physical characteristics. In other words, there might be a good reason why you are the way you are!
