One day Matisse began cutting out shapes from painted paper with a pair of scissors. What began as a way to perhaps while away some time when he was sitting in his wheelchair soon turned into an expression of Matisse's art. The brightly colored paper shapes were soon arranged by the artist's assistants on his walls. Jeanette Winter shows how this new way of expressing his art allowed Matisse to create with vibrant color at a time when he could no longer wield his brush and stand before an easel. A creative art teacher or parent could certainly use this story to inspire a young child to produce his/her own cut-out art using colored paper and scissors.
