This picture book tells the story of how Tesla brought life-changing ideas to the United States and overcame the obstacles often placed in his way by Edison. Ahead of his time Tesla showed how alternating current could be harnessed to operate machinery. He also invented a loudspeaker for telephones and improved a wide range of crude electrical devices. One of Tesla's major accomplishments was setting up an AC system to light the Chicago World's Fair and following that feat, he harnessed the power of Niagara Falls. Besides sharing the story of this remarkable inventor, Elizabeth Rusch also includes a section at the back of the biography called Scientific Notes. Here she explains the difference between AC and DC systems and how some of Tesla's inventions actually worked. The Tesla car company has refocused attention on this inventor and young people are curious why Tesla's name is mentioned in the same breath as battery operated vehicles. This book will shed some light on why interest in Tesla has grown recently.
