We learn how Guglielmo Marconi grew up in Bologna, Italy in the 1870s, fascinated by science, invention and Benjamin Franklin. He learned Morse code as a child and, at age twenty 'was struck by the spark of a great idea. Could he find a way to use radio waves to send wireless messages?' He set up his equipment in attic rooms of the family villa and began his experiments. Once he got the basics working, he started testing over longer distances. He filed a patent in 1896 and set up his wireless telegraph for Queen Victoria's use. And, on December 12, 1901, he succeeded in sending a Morse code signal from Cornwall, England to St. John's Newfoundland. Making Contact! is an inspiring tale and the illustrations bring it to life - perhaps it will inspire another young inventor to achieve great things!
