I
n this picture book for children four years of age and older, the young narrator discovers that different colors mean different things to those around her. The girl's older sister says that blue is '
like a lonely song
', but the narrator disagrees and replies, '
My blue is happy like my favorite jeans and a splash in the pool on a hot day
'.
A
s she works through the color spectrum the child realizes that colors can evoke a wide range of different feelings, from worry and anger to fear or peacefulness. While her cousin says orange is fun, like a bouncing basketball, she sees it in a completely different light, '
Orange is serious like a warning sign and a tiger on the prowl,
' she says.
Y
ou can have fun with this lyrical ode to colors by asking your child what different colors mean to him or her. You might begin by asking, '
What's a happy color?
' or '
What is your favorite color for a car?
'
