Caillou Around Town: Search and Count    by Anne Paradis & Eric Sevigny Order:  USA  Can Chouette, 2013 (2013) Hardcover     Reviewed by Bob Walch Part of the search and count series, this board book encourages the young reader to find different objects in a two page spread as well as count up to ten. An added bonus is that the youngster is also challenged to find things in the picture that do not belong there. For example, one spread pictures Caillou taking lessons at an indoor swimming pool. At the bottom of the page the reader is asked to look closely at the picture and locate four pairs of goggles, six pairs of flip flops, and nine pool rings. There's also a box that shows three things that don't belong in the picture (a fish, frog and pelican). The accompanying text reads, 'Can you spot the things that don't belong?' Other action packed scenes depicted include a picnic, an outing to the Farmer's Market, an aquarium, a circus, a winter parade, and a hospital. Besides enjoying the search and count activity, try asking your child to make up a story for each two page spread. What's happening here? Who are these people? Can you identify other objects in the picture? Part of the fun of a book like this is letting the child's imagination run wild to create his or her own dialogue and story. With a little encouragement your youngster can come up with an interesting, original narrative and perhaps even recall an outing to one of the pictured venues.
