But Jeni disappeared without a trace on a school trip to Berkeley. As Ariel is recovering from the loss of her friend and preparing to go to college, her mother informs her that she has breast cancer. Ariel's life has just changed forever. As Ariel begins to settle down at college and realizes she is a bit of an outcast, she decides to search for Jeni. Ariel has started her own investigation and really wants to unravel the mystery. She knows she will never have peace, not knowing what happened. Ariel wanders one night to an old house in the Berkeley hills and finds herself at a party. She meets three very different, seductive strangers who make her feel welcomed and alive for the first time since Jeni's disappearance. Ariel finds herself on a journey with a strange sense of danger. She is attracted to boy in this group who seems very intense. Ariel knows there is something different about these three. And she just might find out what happened to her friend. The Elementals is written in the first person, revealing a young woman obsessed with her lost friend, one who cannot move on without closure. Though very well done, I found this story a bit weird. But I must say that it did keep me intrigued until the end.
