The transparent pages of this book add a different dimension because with a quick flip of the page, a new scene appears. For example, the first two page spread pictures a herd of bison crossing a rail line. Flip the transparent page and there's a three car passenger train pulled by a funnel smokestack iron horse engine with a big, red cowcatcher on the front coming down the line.

This picture book offers an interesting introduction to trains. From the very first primitive, small, open steam engines to the TCVs that whisk passengers at 300 km/m from city to city today, you'll find a variety of trains here. You'll see the outside as well as the inner workings of a steam engine, the famous Big Boy, the largest and heaviest steam locomotive ever made, the Eurostar operating beneath the English Channel, and various types of high-speed trains like the German ICE, the Spanish AVE and Japanese Shinkansen or bullet train.

From the past to the present, rail transportation has been an important way of uniting cities and bringing people together. This clever book features just some of the innovations and ways trains have made travel easier over the years. Your little engineer will enjoy paging through this overview of trains and seeing how they have changed since the early days of the steam engine.
