S
eldom do we find a children's book that actually makes the youngster think. This new lift-the-flap picture book for children three years of age and older does just that. It challenges the preschooler to tell you
what happens next
.
E
ach two page spread sets up a situation and then poses a question. For example, '
Here's a hungry chameleon. Here's a juicy grasshopper. What happens next?
'
T
urn the half page and you'll find the answer. In this instance '
Thwap!
', the chameleon shoots out his long, sticky tongue and has lunch!
O
ther scenarios include beavers building a home, a peacock courting a peahen, some honeybees, and chimps nibbling on termites. Once you have read the book a few times you should find that your child can answer the key question before you turn the page.
T
his is a simple beginning to what will eventually lead to more complex critical thinking. It is a fun way to begin and, as we have been told repeatedly, a journey begins with a first step. It isn't too early to take this one small step on this important journey!
