When the little girl learns that her class is going to create a mural for the school library, Marisol volunteers to paint the sky. But then she realizes she has a problem. The little artist doesn't have any blue pigment in her paint box. On the way home on the school bus, Marisol ponders the problem and also notices the colors the sky assumes as the sun sets. That night she even dreams about the colors the sky can assume at different times of the day. The next morning it is raining. The sky isn't blue at all! By the time she gets to school, Marisol has it figured out. Grabbing her paint supplies, she creates a palette that will brilliantly mirror the colors the sky can take. The result is breathtaking! Using muted browns and gray, Peter Reynolds sets the stage for his character's discovery of the sky's colors. So when Marisol creates a stunning sky for the library mural, it also pops on the page and jumps out at the reader too. Now that's very cool!
