Suzanne Slade uses animal illustrations to teach the basic elements of division in this attractive book. 'Six rambunctious rhinos making quite a splash – three mommas with their babies. How many in each crash?'

Look at the picture and you'll notice three groups of two. So, six divided by three equals two! There are two animals in each grouping!

After you have looked at all the animals pictures and done a little division, you'll discover the For Creative Minds section at the back of the book. Here you'll find an exercise on matching collective nouns (i.e. a group of toads is a knot) and a world map showing on which continents the featured animals live. There are also two additional pages of division exercises that will help the youngster apply what he or she has learned.

The Great Divide is a great way to introduce a child to beginning simple division in a fun manner. The added benefit is also learning about the special collective nouns used for some animals and where the major continents are located. Now that's getting a lot of BANG for your educational buck!
