'It took 144 years from the signing of the Declaration of Independence until American women achieved suffrage – the right to go to the polls on Election Day and cast their ballots,' writes Kerrie Logan Hollihan in the preface of this book.

What follows is the story of how American women - led by Lucy Stone, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony and a host of others - led the struggle to force the passage of the 19th Amendment which granted women the right to cast their ballots in local, state and federal elections.

The author takes the reader back in time to follow the struggle that eventually galvanized America's women and made the suffrage movement not just a struggle that involved a few individuals but rather one that encompassed women of all ages in every state.

A highly informative text, numerous illustrations and 21 activities will engage readers (ages nine and older) and make learning history an enjoyable task. Among the activities found here are instructions on how to create a banner for suffrage, stage a readers' theatre for women's rights, experience what it must have been like to have to wear a corset, and make a memory book.

Teachers and parents home schooling their children will find this book a very valuable resource as the U.S. national election approaches. Use the book and its activities to engage the child and explain the struggle that had to occur before individuals of both sexes could vote in America.
