i. My name is Grace. When my teacher, Mrs. Barrington, told the class that there had never been a woman who served as the American President I just about flipped.
'
No girls? Who'd ever heard of such a crazy thing?
' I thought. That's when I decided to run for class president. I figured it would be pretty easy until Thomas Cobb decided to run against me. Uggh! Thomas was already the school's spelling bee champion, he always won blue ribbons at the annual science fair, and he was the captain of the soccer team. This was not going to be easy!

homas and I campaigned hard. We made speeches, put up posters, and passed out pins for our backers to wear. Then our teachers did something really interesting.
O
ur classmates were assigned different states and each one could cast the same number of votes as that state had electoral votes. There were 538 electoral votes possible and the winner would need at least 270 of them cast for him or her.
W
ell, on election day in November, the
states
began to cast their electoral votes. We kept track of the totals on the scoreboard in the school gym. Finally it came down to 268 votes for Thomas and 267 for me. Oh dear!
O
nly one state was left, Wyoming, and the boy who represented that state had three electoral votes.
I
t got very, very quiet as he stood up and said '
The Equality State of Wyoming casts its three electoral votes for ...
' Surprise! I'm not going to finish his sentence. You'll just have to read my picture book to see what happened!

ince this is an election year in the U.S.A. you might want to read my book to learn more about the process. The illustrations are pretty cool too. I think the artist did a good joy of showing what I look like. And, if you read my book, you'll see who ended up winning the election!
