King Henry VIII called her his 'pearl of the world.' All that changed when he decided to divorce her mother, Queen Catherine of Aragon, and marry Ann Boleyn. He asked the Catholic Church to give him special dispensation to divorce and when they did not, he cut ties with Catholicism and became Head of the Church of England. Mary, a dedicated Catholic, stood up for her beliefs, and her relationship with her father worsened. Throughout her life, their relationship was stormy, but when he died she was second in line for the throne after her half-brother, Edward V. When Edward V died of tuberculosis, Mary still had to fight for her place as queen. While she was queen, Mary returned England to the Catholic Church and began a crusade against the church her father had established. The Thinking Girl's Treasury of Dastardly Dames series includes Mary because she executed hundreds of Protestants, believing the Catholic Church should be the sole religion of England. Most people don't realize the many things she accomplished to help her people. She is still remembered as Bloody Mary.
