If All the Animals Came Inside
, Eric Pinder gives us the kind of rollicking, rambunctious picture book that kids love, enhanced by Marc Brown's wild and woolly illustrations.
I
t opens: '
If all the animals came inside, / my brother would cry. My sister would hide. / The doggy would bark. The kitten would hiss. / My parents would make funny faces - like this!
'
T
he child goes on to speculate what fun he would have on '
an elephant ride
'; playing hide-and-seek with monkeys and hippo; snacking with '
the skunk and the panda and even the yak
'; racing the giraffe with the ostrich; bathing with the octopus; and so on.
A
ll the way through the refrain is a variation on '
The walls would tremble. The windows would shake. / Oh, what a terrible mess we would make!
' But when the animals take over all the toys, the TV and the bed, it's too much and the children leave the animals to the house '
and go play on the lawn.
'
I
f All the Animals Came Inside
is an engaging exercise of the imagination that will appeal to rebels of all ages - highly recommended.
